We recently asked educators what \nthey most wanted us to feature in professional development webinars. Using that \nfeedback, the News Literacy Project is holding a series of four free webinars, \naddressing essential news literacy topics, every Thursday in May (May 7, 14, 21 \nand 28) at 2 p.m. ET\/11 a.m. PT:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What \nit means to be \u2018news-literate\u2019: The skills students need to know \u2013 May \n7th<\/strong><\/a> 
We\u2019ll provide an overview of the news literacy skills that \nstudents must learn to be reliably informed, such as recognizing the difference \nbetween news and opinion, identifying misinformation, evaluating evidence, using \nfact-checking and digital verification tools, and discerning various types and \nforms of bias. (Note: this is a repeat of the previous webinar on April \n7th)

Exploring \nthe misinformation landscape \u2013 May 14th<\/strong><\/a> 
Learn how to teach \nstudents to stop using the phrase \u201cfake news\u201d and to identify the many types of \nmisleading, inaccurate and false information that they encounter every day. We \nuse examples of misinformation to engage students in news literacy and civic \nlearning, and we introduce digital verification skills and tools for debunking \nmanipulated and false images. We also explain the standards of quality \njournalism, such as fairness, verification, balance and \ncontext.

Teaching \ndigital verification to spark news literacy learning \u2013 May \n21st<\/strong><\/a> 
Dive deep into the tools and skills needed to verify the \nauthenticity of information, and learn to create engaging fact-checking \ninvestigations that inspire students to investigate viral content. Topics \ninclude using reverse image searches to determine authenticity; researching \ndomain registration to discover a website\u2019s owner; using archivers to explore \ndeleted or changed content; developing keen observation skills to detect false \ncontext; and using Google Street View to confirm locations. Access to News \nLiteracy Project resources and classroom-ready examples is \nincluded.

Understanding \nbias: A nuanced approach to a vital news literacy topic \u2013 May \n28th<\/strong><\/a> 
Bias is one of the most controversial and important \nsubjects in news literacy. People frequently perceive and allege bias in news \ncoverage \u2014 but what does this really mean? What makes a piece of news biased, \nand who decides? What role do our own biases play in our perceptions of bias? In \nthis session, we'll help you teach this vital, complex topic in ways that \nempower students to meaningfully evaluate the fairness and impartiality of news \ncoverage.
